Winter is certainly coming with offices around the country commenting, “Gosh, hasn’t it got dark so quickly!” The clocks have changed, Halloween has been and gone, and Christmas is steadily approaching.
This week we’ve been speaking to our favourite ADT teammate, Nev, Head of Training and Development. We sat down over a warm cup of tea to discuss the essentials of vehicle maintenance during this chilly season.
“One important vehicle check that is often forgotten at this time of year is antifreeze, or engine coolant as it is otherwise known,” says Nev.
Obviously, we don’t want our engines freezing up! But what else does engine coolant do?
Stops the engine from rusting up
Lubricates the internal pump bearing
Keeps the temperature at the correct level
And yes, it stops it from freezing up!
“What people often don’t know is that coolant has a life expectancy of around 4 years. After this it can fail to do what it is supposed to do.”
Luckily for us, Nev is on hand to help! You can run a simple check that is cheap and easy to do at home.
Antifreeze testers can be purchased from as little as £1.99. You simply use the small hand held plugger to suck up a sample of your coolant and watch the floating coloured balls. The number that float determines the condition of your coolant. The whole process takes less than 2 minutes.
If the antifreeze tester shows your coolant is not doing its job correctly, you have two options. You can either top it up with concentrated coolant or get your garage to replace it. Please refer to your vehicle manual or speak in store with a trained professional if you want to top up the coolant yourself.
This quick spot of maintenance could save you a whole heap of trouble down the road. No one wants to be caught out with an overheated engine in the dead of winter.
